An old retailer page keeps appearing in AI answers. It describes a discontinued model, carries a product-family name that now refers to something else and offers no clear route to the replacement. The brand has published several new articles, but the assistant continues to draw on the old listing.
Publishing more owned content may be useful. It does not directly repair that source. A citation strategy becomes practical when the team follows the answer back to the page responsible for the information, then decides what legitimate action is available.
Start with the sentence being supported
Do not begin by ranking entire domains as good or bad. A retailer can be a useful source for its own stock while being a weak source for an independent performance judgement. A customer review can describe an experience without establishing that everyone will have the same result.
Inspect the relationship between the sentence and the citation. Does the linked page actually support the claim? Is it discussing the same model? Has the assistant omitted a qualification? The correction might belong in the source, in the brand's supporting evidence or simply in the way the answer has interpreted existing material.
Anthropic's description of Claude web search explains that web-derived responses include citations. Those links make investigation possible. They are not a guarantee that an answer has interpreted every source correctly.
Three sources, three different relationships
The retailer listing
The brand may have an established commercial route for supplying updated product facts. A correction request should identify the exact error, provide supporting documentation and distinguish a factual update from a request for promotional language. Record whether the live listing changes. Sending the request is an activity; resolving the misinformation is the result.
The independent review
A publisher controls its editorial conclusion. The brand can correct a wrong specification, explain a product change or provide access to a testable product. It cannot reasonably expect a favourable verdict in exchange for accurate information. A critical review may still offer shoppers valuable evidence.
The customer discussion
A conversation about a product is not another brand-owned distribution channel. If a recurring complaint reflects a real problem, address the experience behind it. Where a response is appropriate, make the relationship clear and contribute useful information. Manufacturing positive discussion would undermine the credibility the programme depends on.
Give a source something it cannot get elsewhere
There is a difference between repeating a launch claim and publishing a useful reference. A compatibility matrix, an explained replacement-cost estimate or a clearly scoped comparison can help another writer answer a question. Its usefulness comes from the information and method, not from the presence of an outbound link.
The GEO research accepted at KDD 2024 studied changes to source content in a benchmark. It provides a reason to investigate how presentation and evidence affect visibility under test conditions. It does not establish a fixed commercial return from gaining a certain number of third-party mentions.
For a D2C brand, that means choosing evidence assets from observed buying problems. If assistants repeatedly confuse two versions, publish a clear version history and work with relevant partners to correct their records. If ownership costs are poorly explained, publish the calculation and its assumptions.
Judge progress at the source and in the answer
First verify that the underlying information improved. Then observe whether the original questions produce better answers over time. A corrected page may not immediately be used. An answer may change for reasons unrelated to the correction. Keeping both observations avoids claiming more than the evidence supports.
Frontier's citation and source analysis is most useful when it ends in a specific assignment: which record needs correction, which evidence asset would help and which relationship can carry the request. The job is to improve the material available for a fair decision.
