Google Adds Multimodal Search Reporting to Search Console

Google announced web multimodal Search performance reporting in Search Console on 24 September 2026. The company said the rollout would provide visibility into discovery involving images, including Lens, Circle to Search, image uploads and Chrome's image-search function.

In its official announcement, Google described a new multimodal search-type filter in performance reports, including reporting for generative AI features. It said the rollout was global and that metrics would appear for sites receiving the relevant traffic.

Product imagery has a discovery role to investigate

The update offers brands a more specific way to examine how visual discovery connects with their pages. It does not mean every product image will generate traffic, or that a particular creative treatment has become a ranking factor.

Frontier's interpretation is that imagery reviews should include identification as well as appearance. Can a shopper distinguish the product and variant? Does the destination page describe what the image suggests? Are the visible accessories included in the offer?

These are useful questions for consumer brands with similar-looking sizes, formulations or bundles. An attractive visual can still create confusion if it leads to a different version.

A reporting filter is not a complete attribution model

Preserve the report definition when combining the data with analytics. Search visibility and clicks describe a different stage from orders. Avoid presenting a change in one search surface as evidence of an equivalent change in customer demand.

A brand may use the new view to select pages for closer review, then compare the relevant purchase journey and commercial outcomes under its established measurement rules.

A practical review can begin with the priority range

Inspect the pages receiving relevant exposure and check whether the image, variant name, specifications and local availability remain aligned. Record what changes and when, so later observations can be interpreted with context.

The product-proof framework provides a useful companion to that review. Visual clarity is most useful when the underlying product information is equally dependable.

For teams entering Australia, New Zealand or China, the announcement should be read within the actual availability of Google's services and the relevant local discovery routes. It expands one provider's reporting, rather than creating a universal view of visual shopping.
